Dark Space in E Diminish, Op. No. 4, First Movement-Largo, from "Crab Nebula Suite"

Dark space is my version of an unknown area of space. Everyone knows space is dark. NASA will need to explore this particular area before we send our people on exploratory missions. The Science Section of the New York Times did a feature on this subject during 1992 and in January 1993. What I call "Dark Space," is what astronomers refer to as "Dark Matter."

The structure of the composition is based on the E Diminish scale. The melody is an E Diminish scale going up two octaves. I encourage Rob to take liberties with the melodic line. "Dark Space," therefore, will sound different each time it's performed. On this day, the "Dark Space" melody sounded like a cross between an E Diminish scale and an Eb Diminish scale. Hill's part is a series of long sustained notes moving down slowly in half steps. After the improvisations, "Dark Space," comes to a final resolution. The composition ends on the lowest note of Hill's bass, "E."
