about

This cd performance was inspired by my father, Edward Carpenter, found of the Harlem Prep School.

Time & Space Vol. 1 is dedicated to The Planetary Society, the Hayden Planetarium, NASA, NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory, the Smithsonian National Aeronautic and Space Museum, SETI (Search for Extraterrestial Intelligence), and to other organizations devoted to the study of the stars, planets, comets, asteroids, meteors, and nebulas. Time & Space Vol. 1 is also dedicated to Gene Roddenberry, creator of "Star Trek."

Since the dawn of human existence, man has been filled with awe and reverence of the natural forces surrounding him. He was as much in awe upon seeing a meteor shower lighting up the night sky or reacting with fear at the sight of a total eclipse! Today, through the hard work of astronomers (both professionals and amateurs), scientists and physicists, there has been an increase in our knowledge of our ever expanding universe.

At present, funding for the Space Program have been cut drastically. We seem to have lost the vision, motivation, and drive which the late President John F. Kennedy had. He resolved to have the United States put a man on the moon before the end of the decade (before 1970). It is imperative that the United States set aside funds for space research. Outer space is now our "Manifest Destiny!" If we don't do it, other nations will take up the banner either by themselves or working together with other countries. Space travel will challenge the Human Mind and Spirit. It will stretch our Human Imagination to new heights and achievements. The success of Dr. Carl Sagan's "Cosmos" documentary series showed that there is an interest in NASA's Space Program and Astronomy.

As a result of Cosmos, Dr. Sagan formed The Planetary Society. I became a member after being contacted several years ago and have been with the society ever since then. This organization is an excellent way to help guide America's Space Program. The Planetary Society's bi-monthly magazine, "The Planetary Report," provides the latest information on what's taking place not only with our Space Program, but, what other nations are doing too. The Planetary Society is a very involved with projects for the planet Mars. If you want to find out more about The Planetary Society, please call or write them. The information is provided at the end of the liner notes. Highly recommended!

I would be remiss if I didn't comment on the impact of Gene Rodenberry's "Star Trek" series. I was moved by the wide range and scope of the scripts and the acting. On a deeper level, we share Gene's vision of the future. If the different races of mankind cannot live together in peace, how can we expect to live in harmony with alien life forms? I'm sure, once we learn this lesson, in time, alien life forms will make their presence known. Let us welcome our friends from space with open arms and not behave in a manner that was so accurately shown in the motion picture, "The Day The Earth Stood Still."

THE COMPOSITIONS

Pi R Squared

Pi R Squared equals "A" is the equation used to find the area of a circle. Most of us learned this either during junior high school or high school math classes. Rob, Hill and me, work our way through a tricky melody. The same personnel also perform on the "Dark Space" composition.

Science Fiction

We owe a great debt to science fiction writers whether we realize it or not. They were the ones who sparked the imaginations of countless generations. The works of Robert Heinlein and Isaac Asimov should be read by everyone. Science Fiction came of age when Neil Armstrong set foot on the moon. At that moment, science fiction became what I call science "reality." Science Fiction was, from then on, no longer a fantasy or a dream. Cara Silvernail joins the trio for this composition. The quartet also performs together on the last composition, "The Speed of Light:*E=mc2"!

Dark Space in E Diminish, Op. No. 4 First Movement-Largo, from "The Crab Nebula Suite"

Dark Space is my version of an unknown area of space. Everyone knows space is dark. NASA will need to explore this particular area before we send our people on exploratory missions. The Science Section of the New York Times did a feature on this subject during 1992 and January 1993. What I call "Dark Space," is what astronomers refer to as "Dark Matter."

The structure of the composition is based on the E Diminish scale. The melody is an E Diminish scale going up two octaves. I encourage Rob to take liberties with the melodic lines. "Dark Space," therefore, will sound different each time it's performed. On this day, the "Dark Space," melody sounds like a cross between an E Diminish scale and an Eb Diminish scale! Hill's part is a series of long sustained notes moving down slowly in half steps. After the improvisations, "Dark Space," comes to a final resolution. The composition ends on the lowest note of Hill's bass, "E."

The Speed of Light: *E=mc2

*E=mc2 is a formula created by a true genius - Albert Einstein. His theory of special relativity was a giant step in the world of physics. Interested listeners should read more about the life of this fascinating man.

The "Speed of Light: *E=mc2 features the various instruments of the percussion family. I hope you will enjoy the colors of their sounds.

The Musicians

Hill Green - It is my pleasure to have Hill in the band. He has played with the legendary tenor saxophonist Charles Gayle. Hill is a fine bass player and he is certain to leave his mark in the music business.

Cara Silvernail - Cara may be one of the first female saxophonists playing Free Jazz. Time & Space Vol. 1 is her first studio recording with the band.

Rob Brown - Rob's debut recording on the Silkheart CD, "Breathe Rhythm," with bassist William Parker, and drummer Dennis Charles, was highly praised by the jazz critics. Rob can also be heard on my first release, "Black Queen." Both cds can be found in your local record stores. If can't find them, you can buy them from North Country Distributors by mail order. Call (315) 287-2852, FAX (315) 287-2860 or write to: Cadence, Cadence Building, Redwood, N.Y. 13679

======================================================

I would like to thank the Hayden Planetarium for their work. It was under their "night sky during my early years that I was introduced to the adventures of outer space. A special "thank you" is for the actress, Nichelle Nichols, one of the original Star Trek tv series. She is to be commended for using her celebrity status to encourage African Americans and other minorities to seek careers with NASA's Space Program!

Last but not least, I would like to thank the following musicians for their words of encouragement over the years: Sonny Rollins, Eric Gravatt, and Billy Hart. William Parker, your thoughtfulness and support is sincerely appreciated.

To join The Planetary Society, please call (626) 793-5100 or write: The Planetary 60 South Los Robles Avenue, Pasadena, CA 91101
USA You can email them as well: tps@theplanetary.org
Instead of taking your kids to the movies, take them to the your local planetarium and explore the wonders of the universe.
